| PARKH: A Research Journal of Punjabi has a distinguished history spanning more than six decades and occupies an important place in the scholarly tradition of the School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
The journal was first published in 1964 as PARKH: A Research Bulletin in Punjabi Language and Literature (Bulletin No. 1, 1964), under the editorship of Professor Surinder Singh Kohli, then Chairperson of the School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University.
Over the years, the journal was edited by several eminent scholars, including Professor V. N. Tiwari, Dr Attar Singh, Dr Kartar Singh Suri, Dr Kesar Singh, and Dr Raghubir Singh. Their association with the journal reflects its rich scholarly legacy and the distinguished academic tradition of the School of Punjabi Studies.
From its early years, PARKH established a reputation for publishing significant and original research in Punjabi language and literature and gradually gained international recognition. A notable example is the 1973 issue, which featured the research of Dr. U. A. Smirnov, Research Scholar at the USSR Academy of Sciences, Institute of Oriental Studies, Moscow. His research, titled “Discovery of One More Tone in Punjabi and of Pharyngealization of the Known Falling Tone,” demonstrated the journal’s engagement with international scholarship in the field of Punjabi linguistics.
After publication was discontinued in 2000, the journal was revived in 2012 under the editorship of Professor Sukhdev Singh, then Chairperson of the School of Punjabi Studies. Following its revival, the journal was assigned ISSN 2320-9690 and evolved into a multilingual research journal, publishing scholarly articles in Punjabi, Hindi and English.
In 2018, during the tenure of Professor Yog Raj Angrish as Chairperson of the School of Punjabi Studies, the process of taking PARKH online was initiated. At his request, Panjab University made an annual budgetary provision of ₹80,000 for the publication of the journal. This initiative marked an important step towards expanding the journal’s accessibility and strengthening its scholarly outreach.
PARKH is committed to publishing original, high-quality research in Punjabi language, literature and related areas of scholarship. In 2018, the journal was declared a refereed journal pursuant to a decision of the Academic Committee of the Department. Its research papers are evaluated by referees comprising eminent scholars and writers in the field of Punjabi studies from universities and academic institutions across Punjab, Delhi and Haryana.
Over the decades, PARKH has evolved from a research bulletin into a multilingual and refereed scholarly journal while retaining its core commitment to rigorous and original research. Its journey reflects the intellectual growth of the School of Punjabi Studies and its continuing contribution to the advancement and dissemination of scholarship in Punjabi language and literature.
At present, Dr Paramjeet Kaur Sidhu is the Chief Editor of PARKH.
With its rich historical legacy, international scholarly engagement and continuing commitment to quality research, PARKH remains an important platform for contemporary scholarship in Punjabi language, literature and allied fields.
